Where Does The Time Go

I can't believe the last time I blogged was back in December, and it was to follow up on my deer season. I didn't get a chance to blog about my awesome elk season!!!! So I guess now is better than not at all.

This was my second year hunting elk and bar far my favorite hunting season yet! The 2011 season I just did a general hunt which was only 4 days long and didn't have much luck, only spotted a herd opening morning but was never able to catch up to them. For the 2012 season I put in for a controlled hunt along with my grandfather, uncle, and cousin. We all successfully drew our tags for the same unit and season! The upside to this hunt was it was a 9 day long season which meant I had a better chance at bagging one this year than I did in the 4 days last year, the downside we were entering storm season with it being mid November.

I spent 8 of the 9 days including Thanksgiving* out in the woods from well before sun up until it was completely dark most nights! The very first morning of the season we bagged my cousins bull, my uncle had bedded him down the night before and hadn't wondered very far when the sun came up over the horizon. We weren't out for more than 30 minutes before it was bull down! The guys went over the hillside to get him and i stayed up on top of the landing so that i could drive down and around the other side of the unit to pick them up. Opening morning was our shortest trip of the season, we were back in town and had him hanging by 1:00. The next 2 days of the season, we spotted lots of elk but were all either spikes or cows and our tags were for 3 point or better. Then came the 4th day, we had been glassing over a unit for about a half and hour and decided to move on down the road a bit to check out another unit, it wasn't but 5 minutes after we left that some of the guys we were with radioed to us to get back up there, there was GIANT bull that had just come out of the reprod unit. We booked it back up to the spot, they had the range finder on him, it would be a 638 yard shot, long but our guns were all capable of making the shot, just as we get ourselves positioned and line the cross hairs on him, he disappeared back into the timber. We sure as heck weren't going to give up and head on down the road, so my uncle bailed of down one side of the unit into the thick reprod and I and one of his buddies, (i was the only female hunter of the group) took of down the road to get on the other side of the unit and we bailed of down the other side, the plan was for my uncle to spook him out of the timber and out in front of me, our plan didn't calculate for the fact this bull was a smart one, hence why he was so big and had survived season after season, he ran circles around my uncle in the timber and refused to come out... After a few hours we called it quits and moved on down the road. We continued to glass the unit over time after time for the next few days but we never did catch sight of him again. I will be after him again next year!

We spent the next couple of days hiking in and out of units with no luck. The 8th day of the season we checked out our normal units we had been watching and hiking and then half way through the day decided to go somewhere new, we headed for an area on the other side of the mountain, we got to the access road for the unit we wanted and it was apparent no one had hunted it that season because there were trees down all across the road, the guys (who I learned are prepared for everything) pulled out the chainsaws and cut our way in. We stopped about a mile from where we wanted to be and walked the rest of the way in. Success! There were about 5 elk on the ride, all we could see were their ass ends as they were feeding up hill. We sat in the brush on the opposite ridge and watched them for about an hour, they all turned out to be cows. As we were turning around to come out of the brush we glanced over on another ridge and there he was! A 4x5! At this particular time it was just my uncle and I, my grandfather had stayed behind at the rigs. He was feeding in and out of the timber, so we sat an waited. It wasn't but 10 minutes before he came out enough to give us a clear shot at him. We fired! We hit him but only wounded him, it was getting close to dark so the hunt for him was really on. We took off up hill so we could get over to the ridge we had seen him on and then bailed down after him! By the time we located him and the kill shot was made was only about 45 minutes from the time we had first hit him but it was now almost dark. We decided the best option was to gut him, leave him over night and hope for the best! My uncle sent me back up out of the unit so i could let my grandfather know what was going on. This is where it got really interesting.

Keep in mind, this is the Oregon coast, we have some pretty good mountain ranges, it was November, raining, storming off and on all week and pitch black. Normally we all have our own radios but after 8 days of rain and abuse from hiking in and out of units or getting sat or stepped on we were down to 2 radios, and guess who didn't have one, ME! I had a headlamp so I was good, or so I thought. Oh did I mention that this was the worst unit yet, it was at times almost completely vertical and slick as snot from all the mud. The first 10 minutes of my climb back up out of this thing was fine, I could see where I was going, I could see the make shift trail we made on our way down and then it happened. The light in my headlamp quit working. I froze, I was about to completely loose my shit and have a panic attack, and then i remembered my cell phone was in my pocket. I pulled it out and turned on my flashlight app, thank god for technology! Oh i might add I was packing the winch, gas can and rope bag back out with me, but once I lost my head lamp there was no way i could hold my phone and all of that other crap so I made an executive decision, ditch it all and hope to god we could find it tomorrow when we came back. I start my journey back up the hill side and not five minutes later it starts down pouring so my phone is getting soaked, I'm soaked (time for new rain gear) and the flashlight app starts to malfunction because water is getting into my phone. I proceed to try and find my way out with my brief moments of light and soon loose the trail we had created, so i just keep heading up. I knew at some point it was going to crest and then i needed to head left on the top of the ridge, and then there was total blackness. My phone was toast. So hear I am, soaked, no flashlight, no phone, no radio and completely lost and seriously loosing it at this point. I have no idea exactly where I am. I can't just sit here because A. I'm not about to spend the night alone on the hill side, unarmed and B. I'm terrified of the dark and C. its cold and raining. So i started yelling to see if my uncle or grandpa could hear me, no such luck. This is the moment I cam completely unglued and lost it. After a few minutes of a full blown panic attack I pulled myself together and kept climbing out of the unit praying to god he help me find my way out. Soon I came to the top of the ridge, or so I thought and started heading left, a few minutes later I stopped, the moon had come out of the clouds so I could see the general shapes of the things around me and then it hit me, holy hell how did I end up on the other side of the ridge and down into the timber again. Another freak out ensues but this time i pull my shit together much quicker and realize I'm only getting out of here one way and that's if i keep it together and just keep going, so i turned around and headed back up hoping to find the top of the ridge again, no luck. Finally I could hear something, my grandfather had started the truck up, so i start heading in the direction I can hear it coming from, as I got closer I could faintly see headlights, at this point I am beyond relieved! I start fighting my way through the brush and the timber and the closer the lights got the happier I got, then bam it happens. I dropped about 4 feet and on to the road! My grandfather could clearly see I was no where near as happy as I was three hours before when we took off after the bull, i told him about my whole ordeal and he was happy i was safe and found my way back, we talked about next year and how EVERYONE needs a radio whether were in a group or not. I'm glad to say I wasn't the only one who got lost that night, so did my uncle, it was another hour before he found his way out and he wasn't a happy camper either. I look back now and even right after it all happened and laugh, it's scary but kind of funny too!

We headed back to town and at this point it was well after 9 p.m and we all knew my grandmother was probably about to loose it because we had never been out this late. Sure enough she was pacing back in forth in front of the window when we pulled up. I told her all about it and that's when she about cried (I'm her baby), she had a feeling I was lost and was worried sick. I assured her i was fine and that I learned alot from that whole experience for next year. We went back out Sunday morning to retrieve him and thankfully found the winch and everything I dumped the night before. It took quit awhile to get him out because of how steep the unit was but we had lots of great help from my uncles friend and his wife! Once we got him out, we did the whole picture thing, loaded him up and headed home to hang and skin him.

I am so thankful I had a great group of guys (up to 6 of them on some of the days) to hunt with, I learned alot I didn't know since I'm still pretty new to all of this, and I made some awesome memories and that's what really matters to me. I can't wait til next year!

Till next time!

*side not* I did make an apperance to Thanksgiving table, where I proceeded to fall asleep, at the table. My daughter hasn't let me live that one down yet!

A Buckless Deer Season

My 2012 deer season ended with out a filled tag. :( I logged 34 miles on foot, down train tracks, along old logging roads, and up and down hillsides. I'm still kicking myself in the butt for not taking a shot at the one and only shooter I came across all season, I guess ya win some ya loose some right? On the final night of deer season I decided it was time to take little miss out hunting with me, I picked her up from the bus stop and as she got in the truck threw her camo clothing in the back seat next to her. She had a less than thrilled look on her face at first because it was cold and raining be she sucked it up and got dressed as I headed for the hills. Once we got out there though and on top of a unit her attitude changed completely, she was beating me out of the truck to glass it all over. Didn't take long before we spotted some movement but it ended up being a doe, she didn't care though, she was totally excited to see the doe, we hit a few more units before sun down and saw 3 more doe that night. I was really hoping we would find a buck but no such luck. I will say that, that final night out there in the woods was by far my favorite, it was mother daughter bonding at it's finest! I loved watching her get excited when we would spot something and listening to her talk about how she can't wait until next year when she can hunt for deer with me! It's the little things in life that mean the most!

Till next time

Blacktail Season 2012 Contiunes

Since the season started I have logged 23 miles on foot, rain or shine, climbing up and down mountain sides, in and out of the brush in search of a blacktail buck and have yet to find one I can take or should I say have time to take. I went out hunting the other morning before work and that was a bad idea, it was the one and only time that I had been graced with the presence of a shooter, he was a nice sized 3x3 and he just so happened to make an appearance when I was on my way out so I could make it to work on time. The thought crossed my mind that I could shoot him, hopefully get him dressed, hide him and make it to work on time and then come back out after work and get him but I chose against it, mainly because there is a nice sized cougar that roams around out there and because I was working an 11 hr day and it'd be well past dark when i could get back out to him, I'm kicking myself now for not doing it since I have yet to come across him again. This weekend I did come across 2 doe and a spike but nothing legal to shoot. The rut is right around the corner and I'm hoping it will be my saving grace. It is the only time that mature bucks act like idiots in pursuit of tail, but then again just like I said in a tweet conversation, what male of any species doesn't act like an idiot in pursuit of tail! Even though I haven't gotten my buck yet I have loved every second I spend out in the hills! Nothing better than being surrounded by beautiful scenery and listening to the sounds of nature all around me! Here's to hoping that within the next 11 days I can get my buck!

Since I haven't had much excitement happen while I have been out hunting I thought I would post a pretty comical post my buddy Kevin put up about his experience in Elk camp this last week. I died laughing because it is so spot on to every experience Ive had at a hunting camp surrounded by a bunch of men! I totally want in on next years excursion!

Since I am quoting this all exactly from him I dont feel I should spell check him or edit his grammar LOL
In his own words, 2012 Cascade Elk Camp Experience went something like this:

After 24 years of bow hunting this year I was invited to an elk rifle camp for the cascade hunt. These are the observations and things I learned.
When Kenny says go left he is going right. Go Right and don’t listen to Kenny.
When you borrow Kennys gun. Shoot the SOB first to make sure its sighted in. (5 shots at a bull at 50 yards later)
Don’t invite a girl you have barely known to elk camp only to watch her make an ass of herself and get kicked out of camp.
When inviting the girl you don’t know make sure you have other sleeping arrangements, because at 6ft 2 and 200 pounds the front seat of a dodge truck isn’t that comfortable for 7 days.
Don’t set up a tent in a dry creek bed when a storm is coming.
Everyone in camp has medicinal cards.
14 men can go through 5 pounds of chili in less than 5 minutes.
Don’t serve 14 men 5 pounds of chili the night before the season.
8 men can pack out a 900 pound bull whole.
8 men can pack out the same bull whole while drinking a bottle of bourbon and bottle of jagr.
Don’t be the only sober one in camp its boring.
To Ed there is not such thing as enough beer.
When you and the only girl are sitting around the fire while she is refilling her medicinal card make sure you have a rifle next to you when the dumbest bull in the planet walks into camp stares at you and the potentially asks for some breakfast.
7 men will haul an outhouse 12 miles rather than build another one.
Don’t bring just two pairs of socks to elk camp.
If you bring two pairs of socks make sure when you have to do your thing in the woods you have mountain money because then your down to one pair of socks.
When your doing your business in the woods keep the rifle handy for the bull that ends up staring at you wondering why your pooping in his spot. (not easy to get a shot off while dropping trousers)
Don’t give the girl in camp that has more energy than a spider monkey red bull.
While sitting on a ridge top looking at the world stop and thank the man dad that taught you to do this and shed a tear for the things he taught you.
5 miles later cuss dad for teaching you to do these things.
Smile and look back at the loved ones you lost on that ridge and its ok to break down and cry. (love and miss you CC)
Man named them Elk because all the other 4 letter words were taken
8 men will find the ducks game on the radio when desperate.
A beer can and a used arrow make a great antenna to listen to the game.
Shooting a chipmunk skinning it putting a mini game bag on it and tying sticks to his head then hanging it next to the elk will get you many strange looks from other hunters.
Don’t eat chipmunk its not as tasty as you think.
When your hunting with 4 retired guys and your radio goes off that 3 elk are down break your radio and say you didn’t get the call to avoid packing all night in a storm.
Its well worth the 5 dollars to pay for a shower at the resort 20 miles down the highway.
The guys and girls that don’t want to spend the 5 dollars for the shower just give them the money and offer to drive them.
After 2 days of camp people smell. After 4 days people stink. On the 8th and final day nobody wants to get in the same care with the rest of the people.
After 9 days walking over 100 miles, shooting an unsighted gun, packing out other peoples animals. Smelling like a dead hog. Swearing you will never do it again because of the blood sweat and tears you went through.
Thank the people you spend the best 9 days of your life. Kenny, Ed, Tonya, John, Richard, Leroy, Nate, Brian, Ron, Leena, and the rest of the bunch. Then start planning for next year.

Opening Weekend Deer Season 2012

Well this past weekend was the opener of my deer season this year! I have been looking forward to this since I took my buck opening morning last year but seriously counting down the days 3 months prior to the start of the season.  I was hoping the closer opening day got the colder the weather would get, but that didn't happen. It has been unseasonably warm around here. Usually by now we have gotten some rain and the temps are about 10 degrees cooler then they have been. Someone mentioned today were on day 80 something of no rain. Come on this is the Pacific NW we are known for our rain! With the way the weather conditions were I knew that the hunt was going to be challenging but that wasn't stopping me! I did as I do every year, rolled out of bed at 3 a.m. and got ready to go!!! I picked up one of my girl friends who despite not having a tag wanted to tag along any ways and we headed for the hills! I might also throw out there that because of the way the weather has been it has closed down a TON of the land around here to hunt on. The only thing open for hunting at this point is US Forest land and BLM land. When we arrived to the area I wanted to hunt it was about 4:45 in the morning and we still had 2 hours till sun up, around here if you aren't staking out your spot hours before the sun comes up someone else will beat you to it. The land I really wanted to hunt was already staked out (by a friend of mine none the less) so I headed for my 2nd choice. When the sun started to make an apperance I started my trek in and thats when the coyotes started howling. We covered 8 miles on foot and never even saw signs of deer. I found elk droppings, tracks and even a carcass from bow season a few weeks ago, and tracks and droppings from the coyotes I'd heard at sun up but not one single sign of a deer having been any where in the area. Despite not finding a deer it was still a great morning, I was in one of my favorite places, the middle of no where, listening to the crickets, birds, frogs and coyotes and even stumbled across some old barns!!!

I really hope that the weather changes soon but looking at the next 10 days in the forecast I see zero sign of rain :( If the rain keeps holding off guess I will just have to wait for the rut when they start acting like retards and my chances get better!!!! Luckily I have until November 2nd to fill my tag and I will be hiking miles in and out of units, up and down the steep terrain every weekend between now and then!

Happy hunting!!!

Week Long Birthday Celebration

Sunday wrapped up Little Miss Keelies' week long birthday celebration. Boy am I exhausted! She kicked it off at her dad's house weekend before last and it just kept going. Wednesday was her actual birthday so naturally we celebrated then, with neon colored pancakes for breakfast before school, homemade chimichangas (her request) for dinner followed by her gifts from me. Saturday her and I headed to Eugene for our 2nd annual Birthday weekend Mother Daughter football game where we watched our Ducks cream Arizona 49-0. First conference game shut out since 2003!!! We Love Our Ducks! We finished the weekend off with her Duck themed party at the bowling alley Sunday! I loaded those kids up on sugar!!! From cupcakes, to the candy bar, and topped off with cake and ice cream, we will see which parents allow their kids to come next year! I spent so much time prepping for the 2 hour long party I am exhausted. This is the first time ever I made EVERYTHING from scratch, from the chocolate cake with cream cheese filling and frosting, the green and yellow vanilla cupcakes, the marshmallow fondant to make the Oregon O's and green and yellow beads around the base of the cake to the green & yellow rice krispie treat! For the candy bar decor I purchased 3 glass candle holders and painted them green and yellow and attached them to small fish bowls, picked up a few vases and glass dishes from the dollar store. I then purchased 2" Oregon circle images from Etsy and green & yellow ribbon from the craft store and put them on the glass pieces and filled with candy!!! After everything I was wore out, but when she told me it was the best party she has ever had in that moment it was all worth it!

Now that the birthday celebration is done and over it is time to prep for hunting season!!!! Deer season 2012 starts Saturday!!! I've been counting down the days since I took my buck opening morning last year lol but seriously counting them down since 94 days! The closer it gets the more anxious I get!!!! Expect a post about opening weekend next week!!!

Till next time!

I Fell Off The Blogging Bandagon, But Now Im Back!

It's been 8 months since my last real post and I have missed blogging dearly whether or not any one is actually reading them lol. I am going to try like heck to make a habit out of blogging at least once a week since hunting season is 3 weeks away and I've got big plans in the way of hunting this year! My hunting season is usually done and over within 2 months and then I spend the next 10 months going through some major withdrawals, but not any more. Besides my usual deer and elk hunting I'm adding in Fall turkey this year and if that goes well I'll hunt Spring turkey too. I am also going to try  my hand at spring bear and cougar!!!!

On my 8 month hiatus lots of things happened, got a puppy (hoping to turn her into a bird dog), took some time off and enjoyed time with little miss, had a crazy fun summer full of camping trips, one of which I am actually going to blog about because it was pretty darn cool and just enjoyed life!

Ive got big ideas and plans on the horizon so stay tuned!!!!

It's Been A Few Weeks

I have been going non stop lately. That was until this weekend! I finally got an enjoyable/relaxing weekend and it was much needed! The weather here on the Oregon Coast was great! Headed for the valley Friday morning to hit up Cabelas! Got a ton of new lures, some line, and new propane burner for crab cooking and a fly fishing video (Need to figure out what in gods name I'm doing now that I've got the gear for it). Found a PINK pontoon boat that I HAVE to have!!! Was gonna get it come payday but I think I'm going to wait until Spring gets a smidge closer. Got up Saturday morning and headed up river into the boonies to try and get some steelhead fishing in! Hit a few holes with no luck but it was OK, just getting out in the woods was all I needed, the fishing was an added bonus! On the way back down the river did my first ever geo caching excursion, have always heard people talk about it but never experienced it. It was pretty fun think I'll do some more of it on the next nice weekend day! Sunday was a hang at home kind of day. I love those kind of Sundays! Got alot done around the house, which was very much needed. My OCD got the best of me and I cleaned out the freezer in the garage. I'm very glad that happened, I was beginning to think I was almost out of venison and completely out of elk. Wrong! Found quiet a bit of my venison buried at the back and a few rolls of elk burger and a steak! I also realized that the striper supply was almost gone, :(  the salmon supply is much more than I thought and that the crab and clams are starting to run low. Thankfully I will say it's only about 2 more months or so until the striper are back in the river!!!! It is hands down the best fish I have EVER had and I live on the coast so there's access to all sorts of fish. So naturally pulled some of whats left out and BBQ'd it up!!

My day up the river! I love it up here! Cant wait for this summers week long camp trip!

Time to play mom and get dinner going!

Glad It's Over

Let's just say Christmas was not my thing this year. Which is not normal at ALL. Usually I LOVE Christmas. I think with all the drama and chaos and utter disorganization that occurred this year I just had a hard time getting into the full on Christmas spirit. Despite my Scrooge type mood I did make the best of it for mini me. We baked cookies and decorated a ginger bread house as well as put up our own "girls" tree since the boys' tree was less than desirable to her. I did what I could to make it enjoyable for her and when Christmas was done and over I asked her if she had a good Christmas and with a big ol' smile she said "yes"! That's all that matters to me.

Christmas wasn't a total bust though, after opening presents at our house in the morning we spent the day with my guys' family and that is always a good time. I love his family!  I will always be thankful for the fact they make my daughter and I feel included, and that is amazing! Despite the good times and the bad moments this month has brought me I really learned who friends and family were and have weeded the ones who aren't true friends out and sadly to say after this Christmas weekend I even have to majorly distance myself from some family members. It's a sad day when that happens. But I am not going to let any of this negative energy follow me into 2012. Its a new year which is going to be a new me.

On the bright side of it all I did get myself a pretty badass Christmas gift. I finally decided it was time to quit thinking about learning to fly fish and actually do something about. I went out and bought my first fly rod and reel. Now if I only knew what in the hell I was doing. Thank god for Youtube haha, this should get interesting. If any of y'all have any pointers I would love to hear em!

The City Can Suck It

I had been looking forward to going to the city this past weekend for quiet some time. It had been almost a year since I had last been to Portland and I was starting to go through withdrawals! This was going to be the first time in over a year my guy and I had spent a weekend apart, so that was trying enough as is since I knew when it came time for bed I wasn't going to sleep that well, but I found comfort in the fact I was going to be with good friends who were almost like family, or so I thought. More on that situation in a moment. I was also secretly freaking out that I was going to come home to a disaster. Leaving 2 men, who are less than motivated to pick up after them selves, unsupervised in a house I have been working very hard to organize and clean was sure to be the end of me.

Thursday rolled around and I shipped mini me off to school for her last day before Christmas vacation and I went off to work for part of the day. Quitting time rolled around and I headed out of town grabbing little miss along the way. We were starting the 200 mile journey to the big city and at this moment I was super excited about it. I couldn't wait to get up there get a little shopping in and get some GOOD sushi which is so hard to come by around here. 1st stop when we hit the city was her dad's house since she hadn't seen him in a few months. That was bad idea #1 or at least for a few days I thought it was. Now I'm actually glad everything went down the way it did because I have eliminated some unnecessary people from my life. After leaving her dad's I was supposed to head another 45 minutes North to a friend of mines house, well after a conversation with her dad it was discovered this friend who I considered family was nothing more than a lying deceiving bitch. So I headed out in search of a decent hotel. I spent 2 nights in a damn freaking hotel, alone, not cool.

Woke up Friday thinking that it would be better than Thursday had been. It was already off to a rough start because of my lack of sleep in a super uncomfortable hotel bed without my guy. BOO. I figured some retail therapy might make me feel better. I headed for Fishermens Warehouse. I was almost positive I would cheer myself up there. I was on the hunt for a nice rod rack for the house, red power line in 30lb test, some new saltwater grade bombers for striper season coming up, and some 1/2 ounce pink rooster tails. Fishermens Warehouse ended up being a HUGE disappointment, they only had my power line. So I was 1 for 4. Next stop was what used to be the Sportsmans Warehouse and is now something like Wholesale Sports or some shit like that. It turned out to be strike 2 with nothing I was after.  What in the hell is going on here. I was sure a big city would have what I wanted but it had almost NOTHING. Of course I found things I liked so I got them but absolutely nothing I needed. Grrrr. It only got worse from there. As I get out to my truck the guy next to me rolls down his window and says "Sorry but I ran into your truck when I was pulling in". HOLY SHIT are you kidding me? At this point I have had it with the city and the shit going on, I wanted to dive through his window and strangle the dude. Instead I acted more responsibly, got his information and called on it right then, no way was I letting this guy out of my sight without having verified his insurance was legit. After all with my luck he would have left and everything he gave me would have been bogus. After that fiasco I decided I was done with the city. I remembered why I only came up once a flipping year. Let me tell you what I am in no way eager to go back up there. Shit the guided fishing trip I bought on the Columbia up there I'm about to have refunded back because I don't want to go any where near that god forsaken hell hole.

I am so glad I decided before going up there to only stay until Saturday because if I had to spend one more day up there chances were I would have committed homicide. That would not have been good. The only good thing that came out of it was a conversation I had with my Ex's dad which unfortunately I have to keep hush hush about for now and that my daughter got to have a mini Christmas with her dad. But lord was I happier than a clam at high tide when I finally got back home! I dropped my daughter at the babysitters, picked up my boyfriend and we headed for our friends' Christmas party!

Saturday was very much needed after the hell I had been through. It was about a 25 mile drive up the river to our friends place and along the way what runs out in the road, a coyote!!!! He dodged up an old dirt road and we took off after him, ran him quiet a ways trying to tire him out and get a chance at a good shot. Well he most definitely got tired but we never got a chance at a good shot because the road was so bumpy. We finally rounded a corner and he had a clearing to dart of into. Bummer. But the chase was fun. We turned around and headed back up the river. Spending the night with a good group of friends, drinking, bull shitting, and belting out songs like friends in low places and boot scoot boogie in a giant group huddle was exactly what I needed. There is nothing better than a down home redneck party!! And were doing it again NYE this time at my house! Watch out were going to rock the neighbor hood!

Getting Into The Spirit The Redneck Way

Christmas is my absolute favorite time of year! Usually the day after Thanksgiving Ive already got my decorations up and the Christmas music going. Not the case this year. I was moving during the last 2 weeks of November and it was chaos. So needless to stay I'm still getting decorations up as I find them. This year I decided I wanted to have a real tree again. They are so much pretty than an artificial one and smell amazing. Well seeing as how my roommate is a logger he said he would bring one home out of the woods. AWESOME. Well that didn't turn out quiet like I had hoped. And I should have known better seeing as how when I moved in his tree from last year was on the kitchen table still and it was definitely one Charlie Brown would have been proud of. I procrastinated for a few days on saying anything or doing anything with it until the boys took the situation into their own hands.

Last years Charlie Brown tree. I'm still amazed all the needles were still intact

We had a BBQ with friends this weekend at our house and at one point the beer supply ran out so I ran to the store to stock up on some more. Bad idea. Do not EVER under any circumstance leave those boys unsupervised when they have been consuming alcohol. I came home to the tree which I was more than sure wasn't even going to fit in the stand because it was so small, in the stand, and fully decorated. In the kitchen none the less. While I was gone they dug through the totes in the garage and found the lights and my ornaments and went to town. Of course though not without their own touches. When I walked into the house I was speechless. I didn't know whether to laugh because the tree I must say is pretty damn awesome or be pissed because they broke some ornaments in their intoxicated adventure. I ended up laughing, how could I not. They were standing there admiring their work and just the looks on their faces when they saw me come in was priceless. I actually kind of love it but that's the redneck in me. Mini me on the other hand was less than impressed when she woke up the next morning. The 1st words out of her mouth were "What is that"? I Couldn't help but laugh and explain to her what the boys decided to do the night before. She knowing them both all to well just rolled her eyes, shook her head and told me "That's not what I had in mind for our tree mom". Again I was laughing. The things this kid says sometimes crack me up. I promised her I would pull out the fake tree and we'd go buy some new pink and sparkly ornaments just so she could have a tree she wanted. Needless to say this year we have His and Her trees!

The boys pride and joy

His and Hers

And to think I'm leaving the boys unsupervised this weekend while I head to the city for some much needed time away from our sleepy little town. Im terrified to see what the house looks like when I come back.

Here's to another round

Tis The Season If Your 21

I love this time of year! Went to my first Christmas party of the year this weekend! It was my works' party and it was a good time, I work with a bunch of awesome girls! We all brought our significant others and booze, and had an awesome dinner! My bottle was a huge hit I've already had people asking me to make them a batch of their own. I thought I would share the recipe with y'all too since it is TO DIE FOR. I kid you not I could probably drink the entire 2 gallons the recipe makes but it would probably not end well for me since its made with a 190 proof grain alcohol.

Apple Pie

Ingredients
1 gallon apple juice
1 gallon apple cider
6 cinnamon sticks
3 C. sugar
750 ml (a fifth) of 190 proof grain alcohol like ever clear or clear springs

In a large stock pot (i used our crab cooker) combine the juice, cider, cinnamon sticks and sugar. Bring to a rolling boil stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Let cool completely. Once cooled add your bottle of alcohol. Bottle into desired containers. I used the jugs the juice and cider came in but made sure to inform everyone in my house that it was not what the jug said it was.

I kid you not it tastes just like apple pie filling!!! We have managed to polish off a little more than a gallon of it so far so I think I will be making more in the very near future!

I officially started my Holiday baking yesterday! Every year I bake tons of different goodies and give them away to friends and family. I managed to make 4 different types of cookies and a southern bread pudding yesterday! The cookies of course are amazing! But the bread pudding is my absolute favorite! I brought in a plate of goodies to the shop today and the girls favorite is the bread pudding too! I would eat the entire thing if I could without feeling guilty but I would probably have to run a marathon afterwards and that is not happening.

Southern Bread Pudding

Ingredients

2 cups granulated sugar

  • 5 large beaten eggs
  • 2 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 3 cups cubed french bread, allow to sit out overnight or bake in an oven to dry it out
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cup chopped glazed pecans

      For the sauce:

  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/2 cup butter, melted
  • 1 T. brown sugar
  • 1 egg, beaten
  • 1 teaspoons pure vanilla extract
  • 1/3 cup your favorite whiskey/bourbon

Directions

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Grease a 13x9x2 inch pan. Place cubed bread into pan.

In a medium bowl mix together granulated sugar, eggs, and milk in a bowl; add vanilla. Pour over cubed bread and let sit for 20 minutes.

In another bowl, mix together brown sugar, butter, and pecans.

Sprinkle brown sugar mixture over the top and bake for 40 minutes, or until a knife inserted in the middle comes out clean.

For bourbon glaze sauce:

Mix the granulated sugar, butter, egg, brown sugar, and vanilla in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir together until the sugar is melted and slightly thickened. Remove from heat and add the bourbon, stirring well. Pour over bread pudding. Best served warm!

Ive also put raisins in it and it was pretty good but since I was giving it out to people I opted to not put the raisins in since not everyone digs em.

Loads of love and sugar!

Slacking

Hope y'all had an awesome Thanksgiving! I sure did! I love going to the boyfriends parents cause lord can that boys daddy cook!! It was a very relaxing day which was much needed because I have been so damned busy lately it is insane. I am glad to say though that moving is FINALLY over! Now to just unpack, which is the part I like because I get to organize! I'm slightly OCD. Other than Thanksgiving being on of my fav days of the year so is the day after! I joined millions of other people for Black Friday and am I ever glad I did! I will say this though living in a rural town I had to drive 24 miles to the nearest town with Black Friday deals which is also a pretty rural town. Bi-Mart and Fred Meyer woohoo! Bonus though is I don't have to fight insane crowds of thousands of people just a couple hundred!  LOL!  I did the whole Black Friday thing when I lived in Portland and that shit just gets crazy. Bi-Mart was my 1st stop they had a killer deal on a moto shade and wall kit to put the boat under which is much needed since the new house had a uber small garage. I was so glad I decided to detour through the electronics department because they had a super awesome deal on a set of Midland radios! They would have been nice to have opening morning of Elk season so my girl and I could have split up and still been in communication. The second I saw these things I was in love! They were camo! Plus they were super cool cause they came with an ear piece and have a 36 mile range on them! Way better than the 6 mile range ones I had previously looked at. I can't wait to try em out!

I ordered most of my things for Christmas this year online. I'm most excited about the PINK LED T.V I got for mini mes' room! Shes gonna flip! Ordered myself some way cute shirts from Girls with Guns clothing and from Real Hunters Wives!!!!

I should get back to being productive! More later!

Moving Sucks

My weekend was less than exciting. I spent it packing, moving and cleaning. Yuck. I wanted to be out fishing. Let me tell you what, moving out of a 3 bedroom, 2 bathroom house with a shop and a garage is hard ass work. I have so much crap. On the upside of it all though I'm weeding out alot of stuff I haven't used in ages and don't really need and I'm getting fun new things that I don't really need but WANT! I've had mossy oak in my room for years now and I was half tempted to keep it but decided it was time for a change. So I ordered brand new bedding so Im pretty stocked about it. I called it a early Christmas present to myself, which made the price tag of it all totally worth it! Tell me this isn't badass?!?!?! I also ordered the matching curtains and valance!!

Ive also found a ton of things I had forgotten I even owned too! I found a brand new still in the box rifle scope that was a gift from a friend last year, I found my body bag (a cooler for deer) that would have been handy a month ago, tons and tons of candles, just all sorts of stuff I never really unpacked when I first moved in.

Now I'm in the process of selling tons of things on Craigslist and gearing up for a garage sale this weekend so I can turn around and buy new things I'll stick in a corner and forget about!

There was a bright moment in the middle of all the chaos of cleaning and packing when the mail came and my custom made laptop sleeve arrived!!! I LOVE it! She did an amazing job! Its exactly like I told her I wanted it!!! If you ever need sleeves for you laptop, kindle, or whatever go Here

Happy Tuesday!!!

Back To Reality

Today is my first day back to reality, i.e. work. I spent the last 4 days beating down brush trying to kill my 1st elk. I had no luck. :( Opening morning I spotted 4 head over a ridge and down the hill and after hiking through the hills I finally got to the general area where I had seen them. It was apparent they had been through there not long before I got there. There were fresh tracks and droppings EVERYWHERE. I followed the tracks until they disappeared into the marsh and up the other side of the unit. It was getting close to noon so I decided to hike out and come back in the evening time to try and catch them heading back out of the brush. That didn't pan out either, no sign of the elk coming back so I hung around in the brush for a while and headed back to the junction where they had come down that morning to see if I could catch them there. Didn't find em there but I sure as hell got the surprise of my life, right where I had been in the brush 30 minutes prior there were fresh bear prints and big ol pile of crap. I decided I wasn't hanging out in the bottom of that unit anymore so I high tailed it out of there and back up to the top where I can see what in the world is around me. Now I know I shouldn't have been scared I mean for fucks sake I'm packing a 30-06, I could shoot the damned thing but I was. I'd much rather be able to see him coming from up top then straight out of the brush behind me. I definitely will be coming back for that SOB come spring bear season and I will be prepared to meet it face to face. It started getting late so it was time to head out and head home. Opening day was pretty good, spotted the herd, quiet a few deer, and evidence of a bear. I figured Sunday it would be GAME OVER.

Sunday morning I hiked back out to where I had spotted em the morning before and nothing, not even a single fresh track to even indicate that they had come back through. This was extremely disappointing. I stayed in the general area hiking up and down and all around for a few hours but decided to move on and see if I could track down another heard some where else. I spent all of Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday covering miles upon miles of back country trying to find a herd and couldn't find a damn thing. I never even saw another animal those 3 days I was out. It was crazy! I was in prime elk country and nothing. Oh well that's how it goes sometimes. There's always next year. But next year screw this general season crap I'm putting in for a controlled hunt. I will say though even though I didn't get my bull I found some prime deer locations for next fall! I also got paid time off to go hunting! Nothing better than getting paid to do something you love!

I also can't say enough about my new gloves I got the night before opener. I ran down to Walmart in the next town down because I just LOVE their hunting department! I was in dire need of some new gloves because I knew it was going to be cold. I got a few pair and of course a ton of other stuff because I cant seem to say NO to things camo! I haven't tried out the fleece pair yet but I'm sure they will be great! The Real Tree Light Weight Womans Glove was what I used all weekend long. They were light weight, comfortable, kept my hands warm and dry (ran into rain a few times), and the embossed no slip grip on the palms was AMAZING! I didnt have to worry about loosing my grip on my binos or my rifle! If you ever run across these gloves I highly recommend them, especially for the price too, I paid something like $8.00 for each pair.

And since I didn't end up with my elk I've got no pictures for you of it but I do have some of the killer views I had all weekend!!

I love living in Oregon, its gorgeous even on a cloudy day!

I will say I am SUPER glad I didn't find anything here because that hike down to the bottom and back out would have been HELL.

Here's to a bear skinned rug next year!

Starting To Get Impatient

Elk season for me starts Saturday, but I am sure you all know this by now because I can't seem to shut up about it. It's consumed my thoughts since Monday morning. I started the countdown then and I won't stop til sunrise Saturday morning! And because my mind is consumed with the thoughts of elk and hunting just about everything else that I think about gets tied into it. For instance I decided it was time for some new DIY projects and decided I wanted to make a few scarves, well I know what style I want to make the question was what color? Immediately I thought Mossy Oak or Real Tree! Leave it to me to want to make a camo scarf to wear with my dress clothes! Then I decided why not make more? Why not girl it up a bit? I'm going to make multiple. Some just camo, some camo and pink, camo and black, camo and whatever in the hell I decide at the moment!!!! Then I decided I want to make matching head bands and bows! If my weekend wasn't already pre-planned out and I wasn't out to harvest a big ol Cascade Bull Elk then I would probably whip out my camouflage dip kit and dip everything I can get my hands on. Keep your eyes peeled as my store on Etsy might just have some new items soon!!!!

Dreamin of the big one!!!!

Maybe It's The Weather

I love fall and all it has to offer! The weather (most of the time), Halloween (my favorite holiday), Salmon season on the river, Deer and Elk Season, and my favorite part of my wardrobe, boots, hoodies, and jeans!!!

The last few days I've kind of been in a rut, and not the kind of rut where bucks let down their guard and act like an idiot and run wild in the day time so they can try and score a piece of tail! I'm talking in a gloomy, moody, I need some drastic change in my life rut. Id much rather be in the other kind of rut though LOL.

Usually when I get like this as I do every fall for some reason, which has got to be due to the dreary weather that I beg for all of September so I can have a better chance at harvesting a deer I make physical changes. Well Ive already chopped about 4" off of my hair and dyed it dark a week ago so can't really change that. I mean I could I could go pixie short and bright pink but that is definitely not happening. I'm in the mood for tattoos and piercings. Ive got 6 tattoos already and 1 piercing other than my ears and I feel like more. I think piercings are a smarter prospect as they can easily be taken out but I LOVE tattoos and I am ready to start a 1/4 sleeve. I want it to be girly yet reveal who I am. How do I incorporate hunting, fishing, horses, lace, and pink into a girly tattoo??? If any of you who read this happen to be a good artist throw me some ideas! There is only 1 problem to this whole wanting a tattoo though, my artist lives in freaking Texas. That's a long ass ways away. Gives me a good excuse for a trip to my favorite place in the world! But it also makes the ink that much more expensive. Maybe it's time to find an artist closer to home. Hmmmm.

In the mean time though I just arraigned an appointment to add some more holes to my ears. I'm hoping this helps me get out of my funk and stop wanting to change things. Because quiet honestly I am itching to move back towards the city. That is not the best idea. A. I know I will hate it once I do it, B. No way my guy would ever live there, C. If I want to go hunting, fishing, or 4x4ing  Ive got quiet a ways to drive for anything decent.

Oooooh maybe some online retail therapy will perk me up. This girl needs some new binos!

The Dreaded Question

It's that time of year when friends and family start asking "What do you want for Christmas?" I don't know why but I hate that question. I never know what to say. I'm more of a buy me a gift card to my favorite stores kind of person. That works for some of my friends and fam but for others they tell me that's to impersonal. Uggh. So this year I decided I'd make a virtual wish list from all over the internet. This way they can see what I like and what I've been wanting/thinking about getting and hopefully it will give them something more "personal" to get me than a gift card. Plus I was sick all weekend and didn't do much but lay around, sleep, and watch movies so Ive got nothing super cool to blog about. But that's ok with me cause I needed to just relax and get well before next weekend cause it's elk season!! YAY!!!!
